London has long been hailed a global financial centre and a key hub for banking, trading and technology. A Bank of England survey revealed the daily average of Foreign Exchange traded in the UK in October 2015 totalled a staggering 2148bn or 2.15 trillion dollars – the equivalent of two thirds of the UK’s annual GDP - in an average day. Additionally, the London Stock Exchange (LSE) is the third largest exchange in the world with a market capitalisation of US$6.06 trillion (2014).
In recent years the financial services industry in particular, has seen a wealth of innovative and disruptive technologies emerge. Developments ranging from artificial intelligence driving trading algorithms through to high frequency foreign exchange platforms, London occupies an important space in the sector’s growth. This is further demonstrated by heavy investment in London-based technology companies that have collectively raised $5.2 billion of venture capital funding (2016).
