This month the CF:G team got to speak to the awesome Amelia Humfress, who is not only the CEO and Founder of coding courses company Steer, but also one of our illustrious CF:G Ones to watch!
Read on to find out more about her, as well as the awesome Beyond Conference (for junior developers and new coders) that Steer are putting on in November (and CF:G are supporting!)
*So, what’s your name?*
*And what do you do?*
I’m the Founder and CEO of Steer. We offer week-long and one-day coding courses in London. Most of the people who attend our courses are working in the creative and technology sectors - we teach a lot of designers, project managers and people who work in marketing.
*Can you tell us a bit about what Beyond 2015 is about?*
Beyond 2015 is a one-day conference for developers and people who have recently started coding. The speakers at Beyond 2015 include Paul Lewis from Google, Alex Sexton from Stripe and Una Kravets from IBM Design. There will also be a number of hour-long immersive workshops on design and development.
*Why did you want to create this conference?*
People who’d been on a Steer course would often ask us for conference and meet-up recommendations. There are lots of great events in London (like the ones run by Code First: Girls!) but we struggled to recommend conferences that would be suitable for a relatively junior audience. We also wanted a number of the talks to be about career development - this subject is often missing from conferences for coders and it’s so important.
*What can I expect to learn and hear about?*
*Who is Beyond aimed at? If I’ve just started coding in the past months should I still come along?*
Absolutely. Beyond is an event for developers and people who have recently started coding. Whether you’re working as a developer or have been learning to code in your spare time, Beyond is the conference for you.
*If you were to be totally biased (we won’t tell them), who are you most looking forward to hearing speak at Beyond?*
I’m really looking forward to Una Kravet’s talk, ‘Open Sourcing Your Life’. She’s telling her story of putting her personal goals on GitHub and how it’s improved her productivity. She points out that developers often talk about optimising their code bases, but rarely focus on optimising their personal development - it’s so true! In this talk, Una’s going to teach the audience how to set up their own personal goals system.
*When is it taking place and how can I get a ticket (and can I be cheeky and get a discount)?*
Beyond 2015 is taking place on Monday 23rd November at Milton Court in London. Tickets will be £250 but you can get an early bird ticket for £150 if you’re quick! To buy a ticket and see the full list of speakers, go to our website: http://beyondconf.co
