On Wednesday 18th June, the Code First: Girls team had the pleasure of attending a Fireside Chat with Maria Ingold who is the CTO of Mireality, a video on demand consultancy. This was a part of London Tech Week and was hosted at enormous ExCel Centre. We would like to share our experience with you.
The aspect of the talk which stuck out the most for us was Maria’s ethos; it mirrors that of Code First: Girls. Maria continuously emphasized the importance of following one’s curiosity from an early age. Children are always in wonderment about the world around them, how things work, why the sky is blue and why they feel certain ways after playing different sports. She advocated that it is this curiosity that should guide people, not just women, into discovering their passions and interests and consequently inspire them to create things that not only cure this curiosity but also dwell into its deeper layers.
A sub-section of Maria’s talk was about intimidation in the tech industry by men. Very bluntly, Maria admitted that this is just something women in the industry have to deal with. It is the case for any male dominated industry. She emphasised the balance between enduring the intimidation and gaining respect. The main aim is to gain respect, where no one questions your knowledge because you are a woman and wants your input. This will not be easy but it in the long run it is achievable.
Maria’s talk also offered a lot of general lessons for the audience. One lesson that really stuck with us was we should tell people what we want them to do, not how we want them to do it, and then thank them. Maria explained that everyone’s brains work different, people find solutions through different ways. By having different ideas and solutions floating around the end result is much more likely to be effective.
Overall, we believe that Maria Ingold is an extremely inspirational women. Her resilience and passion about the industry is evidence of how barriers into tech can be broken. To find out more about London Technology Week check out their website: http://londontechnologyweek.co.uk/
